What Young People (and Their Parents) Can Do to Grow Up with a Healthy Self-Image

Growing up means discovering who you are and what you stand for. That’s always been a challenge, but for today’s generation, it’s more complex than ever. Coming of age in a world of social media, constant distraction, rising academic pressure, lockdowns, and climate change, how do you navigate that?

Generatie Zelfvertrouwen is the result of a unique long-term study on how young people develop their self-image. It shows that the challenges of our time don’t have to lead to anxiety and self-doubt. In fact, with the right support, young people’s brains are designed to meet these challenges head-on.

Eveline Crone is one of the leading researchers in the field of the teenage brain.NRC

About the authors

Professor Eveline Crone leads one of the world’s most prominent research centers on brain development. She has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Spinoza Prize, and was named the most influential woman in science by Opzij magazine in 2017.

With her bestselling book Het Puberende Brein (2009), she brought neuroscience to a wide audience, explaining how the developing teenage brain leads to impulsive behavior, poor planning, and rebellion against authority, in other words, what makes teenagers “teenagers.”

Fifteen years after the release of her bestseller Het Puberende Brein, Eveline Crone believes it’s time for a paradigm shift: social media, academic pressure, and the many challenges of today’s world don’t have to lead to anxiety and insecurity in young people. With the right guidance, this generation can become the Generation of Confidence.
